Happy 2011 to all! We hope this will be another fabulous year for each of you in every way. Please send some news and come by and visit us at camp if you can—our 62nd season!

Best wishes for a great year, great music and peace,
Jamie & Ellen

Adam Luker (staff 2000s) married Emily Robida in a small ceremony in Castries, St. Lucia on January 7, 2011. CONGRATULATIONS to Adam and Emily on their big day in such a beautiful place! See all the wedding photos.

Jamie and Ellen have greatly enjoyed attending recent performances by 2000s staff alumni Dan Stackhouse and Karen Oliver. On February 4, Dan performed in the pit orchestra for the Boston Conservatory's excellent production of Humperdinck's classic Hansel & Gretel, given in the brand new, beautiful BC theater. And on February 12, Karen played in a marvelous recital by the U.S Army Training and Doctrine Command Band Brass Quintet at Gordon College. Dan and Karen both did outstanding jobs and it was such a pleasure to see and hear them. Bravo!

I remember her well, and also the wonderful summers I had at Phil and Ruth Saltman’s camp... I still have photos from my 1956 performance of The King and I and such great memories hearing Ruth sing... in the performance held in Marblehead. In 1957, I performed in Camp Encore’s production of Brigadoon, which was held at the North Shore Circular Theatre. Our training was of the highest level of professionalism and the campers were very disciplined and talented... My music teacher at Camp Encore was Jacob Druckman, and his wonderful wife Murial Topaz (Juillard faculty) gave me private ballet classes during our lunch break…" Carol went on to become the principal ballerina of the Boston Ballet Company.

Laura Jekel (Camper, Staff, 1990s, 2000s) writes, "Hello from Price Hill in Cincinnati! After an amazing year as an Abreu Fellow in Boston, Baltimore, New York, L.A. and Venezuela, I'm finally putting what I learned into practice. I arrived in Cincinnati in June and have been working on founding MYCincinnati, a youth music program that will be modeled after Venezuela's national youth orchestra program, El Sistema. MYCincinnati will be under the auspices of Price Hill Will, a community-based organization. The program itself will take place in a former dormitory building that is attached to a church in Lower Price Hill. The space is being provided rent free by BLOC. Recently, a group of 25 high-schoolers from Indianapolis came in to paint the building. You can learn more about Laura's work and travels on her blog

Jo Horsley (Camper, Staff, 1990s, 2000s) recently composed music for a film called "My Kingdom (Da Wu Sheng)", a Chinese martial arts/action/ drama/romance that takes place in 1920s Shanghai, and is based on the lives of traditional "Opera Warriors." Ed Marcus' (staff 1980s, 1990s, 2000s) Suite for Chamber Orchestra enjoyed acclaim for its world premiere performance by the Chroma Chamber Orchestra, in their inaugural concert. You can read a review of the orchestra here. Scroll down to the middle of the page to read about Ed's piece. Ed wrote us, It was really nice for me to get a sense that I can “play in that league” as a composer. We made lots of potentially valuable contacts, and in fact Penny and I are planning to move to Chicago (or actually a nearby suburb like Evanston, where our horn-playing friend Lisa Taylor lives, or Skokie) this summer to see if the 10-fold greater musical activity versus St. Paul might provide more opportunities.

Bill Barclay (staff 2000s) is a theater professor at Brandies University in Waltham, MA, and has just directed a wonderful production of Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors, featuring two sets of twins in the cast (wow!), and all original music composed by Bill.
